do unique books exist?

 

It can be hard to find books that are really unique these days. I mean, how many times have you read a book and thought, ‘this sounds a lot like X book’, or ‘this trope has been used way too many times’? Because I know I’ve thought those things a lot.
I think with YA specifically it can be hard to create brand new ideas, especially when your setting is a high school romance, or your main character is ‘the chosen one’ in a fantasy.
Of course, I’m not saying that all YA books are the same because they definitely aren’t. And there are unmistakably some books that I’ve read, that were unlike anything I’ve read before. As well as this, there are plenty of books out there that I’m yet to read that have a unique premise that most definitely make me want to read them even more!

This blog post idea came from the Top Ten Tuesday feature hosted by Broke and Bookish, which can be found here. I am a week late with this, but it’s okay because my blog *cough* life *cough* is a mess anyway.

So, without further ado, here’s a list of 5 unique books I’ve read, and 5 unique books I want to read, which I may have stolen this particular idea from Bec over at Bec’s Books (so you should all follow if you haven’t already).

 

Books I’ve Read: 

1. Illuminae Files – Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

 

If you’ve read these books then you know exactly why they’re unique. If you haven’t, then basically this story is told in a number of different ways, from chat room IMs, to security footage and diagrams; and I advise you to go read them immediately.

2. The Hate U Give – Angie Thomas

 

This book is based on the Black Lives Matter Movement and is unlike anything I’ve read before. It was emotional and hard-hitting and so extremely important, especially with our society today.

3. Tiny Pretty Things – Sona Charaipotra & Dhonielle Clayton

 

What made this book unique to me was the fact that I’d never read a book with a ballet setting. As well as this, the authors don’t paint a perfect, pretty picture of the characters in this novel, but a much darker picture, which I really loved and found gripping and highly entertaining.

 

 

 

4. The Young Elites – Marie Lu

 

I have spoken about my love for this series before, but definitely not enough. What makes this trilogy so unique is the fact that the main character is an anti-hero, rather than the hero. Again, I highly advise you to go read this trilogy immediately if you haven’t already.

5. Forbidden – Tabitha Suzema

 

Now, this book is definitely unlike anything I’ve read. It features a very taboo relationship, which I admit can make it hard to read, but I still recommend giving it a try. This book is not only unique, but will most likely break your heart.

Books I Want To Read:

 

1. A Monster Calls – Patrick Ness

 

I’ve heard many amazing things about this book, but all I really know is that it follows a boy who is trying to deal with many of his own personal monsters, including his mother’s treatments. I’ve flipped through this book at the bookstore so many times, looking through the illustrations and needing to buy it, but I always end up putting it back on the shelf because it’s always too expensive.

 

2. The Book Thief – Markus Zusak

 

Yes, I know. I still haven’t read this book. I swear I’ll get there one day soon though, okay?

Anyway, all I know about this book is that it’s set in WW2 and is narrated by death. NARRATED BY DEATH. If that isn’t unique then I don’t know what is.

 

 

 

3. This Savage Song – V.E Schwab 

 

Monsters that can steal souls with music? Um, yes. Please.

I’ve only just been introduced to the magic that is Victoria Schwab’s writing, but I know so many people love this book and I am definitely looking forward to reading it.

 

 

 

4. Ready Player One – Ernest Cline

 

Another book that almost everyone else has read, yet here I am. All I know about this book is that it’s set in an alternate universe where video games are a kind of reality, and that sounds pretty unique and entertaining to me.

 

 

 

 

5. When Dimple Met Rishi – Sandhya Menon

 

The reason I added this book here is because I’ve never seen or heard of a book, especially a YA book, that deals with the topic of arranged marriages. I have heard AMAZING things about this book already and it’s not even released yet, so I cannot wait to get my hands on it.
