did i get my tbr under 100 in 2018?

Short answer: Yes, yes I did.

I bet you thought I was going to say no, right? Well jokes on you, I did it. I DAMN WELL DID IT AND I AM HELLA PROUD.

Honestly, I still can’t quite believe it. I mean, 100 books is still a lot, but as an avid book collector and reader, it actually seems like a small amount. I know a lot of people in the book community that have huge TBR’s, and I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, I mean it’s like having your own personal library so really what more could you want?, but I just couldn’t stand it anymore. It was stressing me out, and I would look at my shelves and see so many unread books, and be like ‘why are you like this?’

But anyway, if you’re reading this and have no idea what I’m talking about, in June 2018 I decided to unhaul a bunch of books, and then count how many I still had unread on my TBR. As it turned out, I had about 136 unread books on my bookshelves. So, I figured, hey, you know what would be a great idea? To try and get that under 100. And to do this by the end of 2018. So I really only had to read 36 books, and so I made it my main goal for the second half of 2018.

And I did it.

Not only did I want to just get my TBR under 100, but I also created a list of 36 books I wanted to read before the year ended. I mostly wanted to focus on books I’d had unread on my shelves for years because I find that us book bloggers get easily caught up in new releases and basically push aside our backlogged books to read these instead. Which is fine, until you have like 200+ backlogged books staring at you everytime you put a shiny new book on your shelf… But I’m getting off topic.

Anyway, if you haven’t seen my other two posts about this challenge, you can read the original here, and my three-month update here.

So, here was my TBR for the challenge:

  1. The City of Brass
  2. The Exact Opposite of Okay
  3. A Thousand Perfect Notes
  4. Rough Animals
  5. Jar of Hearts
  6. One Tiny Lie
  7. Four Seconds to Lose
  8. Five Ways to Fall
  9. Shiny Broken Pieces
  10. Eliza and Her Monsters
  11. We Should All Be Feminists
  12. Second Chance Summer
  13. 10 Things I Can See From Here
  14. Begin, End, Begin
  15. Risk
  16. Found
  17. A Shadowโ€™s Breath
  18. Leah on the Offbeat
  19. Iโ€™ll Give You the Sun
  20. More Happy Than Not
  21. Always and Forever, Lara Jean
  22. From Twinkle, With Love
  23. Night Film
  24. The Book Thief
  25. A Monster Calls
  26. The Language of Thorns
  27. Their Fractured Light
  28. Strange The Dreamer
  29. Legend
  30. Prodigy
  31. Champion
  32. Cinder
  33. Scarlet
  34. Cress
  35. Winter
  36. Fairest

As you can see, I still have five books that I didn’t actually get to. Two of them I ended up unhauling after I got my TBR under 100 as I wasn’t really interested in them anymore, and the other three I just didn’t end up reading. Those three are on my TBR for this year, however, and if I get through the year without reading them then I think it’s a sign that I will never read them. Even though I didn’t read every book on this list, I still got my TBR under 100 and did so by actually reading the books and not just by unhauling them, which makes me pretty proud.

So, where does my TBR sit at the moment?
I currently own 91 unread books but have no idea how many books I actually own all up. I recently unhauled a whole heap of books, mostly ones I’d read but also some unread, so I actually don’t know how many books I currently own but I’d say it’s still over 300 (was at about 360 when I started this challenge).

2019 goals?
I really want to get my physical TBR under 50 in 2019, which sounds impossible and crazy just saying it. But it means I only need to read about 40 books, and since I usually average 60 books a year, I think I can actually accomplish it. I will be doing a video on my YouTube channel about this challenge, as well as sharing my priority reads for the year, so make sure you’re subscribed so you don’t miss it!

But yeah that’s it. I completed my 2018 challenge and got my TBR under 100. I am pretty damn proud of my efforts and really hope I can keep it going this year and lower my TBR to 50, but we will just have to wait and see what happens.

Have you planned any TBR challenges or reading goals for 2019?

Until next time,

danielle

  1. Congrats! I always tell myself that I’ll tackle my physical tbr (especially backlogs) and I never did. Although this time around, I’d like to get serious.
Good luck with your goal this year! I’m sure you got this!! ๐Ÿ˜€
