unpopular opinions book tag

If you’ve been following my blog, or any of my social media accounts, for a while then you’ll probably know that I am full of unpopular opinions. I’ve done this tag before, about a year ago (click here if you want to check it out), but somehow I have acquired a lot more unpopular opinions since then.
I, of course, do not mean to offend anyone here, and if I mention one of your favourite books or series please don’t take it personally. Everyone has different opinions, so respect mine and I shall respect yours!

A popular book or series that you didn’t like –

Oh boy, where do I even start?

The Raven Cycle – Maggie Stiefvater

You’ve probably heard me talk about my dislike for this series plenty of times before, but it was the first one that popped into my head for this question. Basically, I found this series highly overrated, rather boring, and the ending was very anticlimactic. If you want to know my full thoughts, click here for my review.

The Bronze Horseman – Paullina Simons

Another book you’re probably tired of me talking about. I thoroughly disliked this book, as in it’s one of my least favourite books ever. I hated all the characters and the romance was horrible and abusive and just, ick. You can read my full, ranty review here.

All The Bright Places – Jennifer Niven

This was just a book that didn’t live up to its hype for me. I couldn’t connect to the characters and it just wasn’t really the book for me. I have a review here if you want to know my full thoughts.

 

A popular book or series that everyone else seems to hate but you love –

The Selection – Kiera Cass

I don’t know what it is about this series, but it was so damn addictive. I’ll admit that it has some issues, but I couldn’t help but love it. Definitely a guilty pleasure series that’s for sure.

 

A love triangle where the main character ended up with the person you did not want them to end up with, or an OTP you didn’t like – 

(SPOILERS FOR THE GRISHA TRILOGY)

I was really disappointed that Alina and Mal ended up together. I really wanted Alina and Nikolai together so badly, and I felt like she chose Mal as like, a safety net and a quick getaway from the rest of the Grisha world. Ugh, Nikolai is precious and deserved happiness and I just felt so sorry for him.

 

A popular book genre you hardly reach for –

Supernatural. I said Historical fiction in my last unpopular opinions tag, and after reading The Bronze Horseman have been put off from reading anything else in the genre, but I wanted to choose different answers to the last post. Supernatural is definitely not a genre I read much of anymore, mainly because I’d rather read fantasy instead.

 

A popular or beloved character that you do not like –

Oh damn, I’m going to get some hate for this….. Rhysand from Sarah J. Maas’ ACOTAR series. I did enjoy reading about him, and I admit he was quite the character, but I just think he’s extremely overrated. I just didn’t fall in love with him like everyone else…

 

A popular author that you just can’t seem to get into – 

Lauren Oliver – I read the Delirium trilogy a few years ago and with the way it ended I’m not really interested in any of her other works.

Sarah J Maas – Not that I can’t get into her books, but I just can’t be bothered with her books. I’ve just really lost interest in her works.

 

A popular book trope you’re tired of seeing –

I’m getting really sick of the whole “I have powers that I don’t know how to use until my life is in danger or I actually need to use said powers”. It’s always so convenient and it just really annoys me and seems highly unrealistic; like let the character fumble for their powers, let them defend themselves without their powers first and then gradually bring their powers to the surface.

 

A popular book or series that you have no interest in reading –

Throne of Glass – Sarah J Maas

I bet you didn’t see that coming, right????? Like I said earlier, I’ve just really lost interest with this series and the author and I’m not going to push myself to read a series just because everyone else loves it.

Carve The Mark – Veronica Roth

I admit I was excited when I first heard Roth was writing another book, but unfortunately, that was before other reader’s had discovered that it has harmful representation and is also racist. If you are unaware of this, you can easily find out more by googling ‘Carve the Mark problematic’, or ‘Veronica Roth problematic’. After reading a lot of reviews, tweets, and discussions, I am no longer interested in reading this book.

 

The saying goes “the book is always better than the movie”, but what movie or TV series adaptation do you prefer more than the book?

If I Stay – Gayle Forman

I didn’t actually enjoy this book as much as everyone else seemed to. I found it kind of slow and it didn’t feel like much really happened, but damn did it make a great movie. The movie was amazing and made me smile, laugh, and cry.
